KARBON KOMPOST
Cesme, Izmir
2018
Karbon Kompost was established in Alaçatı as a pilot venture to test the economic and ecological viability of localized waste-to-resource systems. In a region characterized by high-maintenance private gardens, the project identified "green waste"—seasonal prunings and plant material—not as a disposal problem, but as a raw material for high-value soil production.

The business model focused on closing the nutrient loop within the town’s boundaries. By coordinating the collection of organic matter and implementing controlled composting processes, the initiative transformed local waste into a premium commercial product. This created a circular value chain where the nutrients extracted by Alaçatı’s gardens were processed and reinvested into the landscape eliminating the need for external fertilizers and long-distance waste logistics.

Beyond the technical process, Karbon Kompost functioned as a strategic intervention in urban habits. Through workshops and professional services, it reframed soil fertility as a shared infrastructure. The project demonstrated that small-scale, place-based businesses can successfully decouple growth from waste, proving that ecological restoration can be a sustainable and profitable operational model.
